Before you stands a testament to faith resilience and survival. This isn’t just any church. It’s the Dormition Church. The only functioning Orthodox church in all of Beijing. A beacon of spirituality in a city teeming with ancient and modern wonders.
Its story is one of destruction and rebirth. Imagine the original Albazinian church built in 1685. It was a small wooden structure dedicated to St Nicholas. Then came the devastating earthquake of 1730. It leveled the church. Yet they rebuilt. The restored church stood proudly for 168 years. The Boxer Rebellion in 1900 brought further destruction. The church was reduced to ashes along with many other buildings in the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission. The faithful were massacred. Two hundred and twenty-two souls lost.
A new chapter began in 1903. Bishop Innokenty Figurovsky blessed the creation of a new church on the same site. This structure too met its end in 1957. A memorial cross marked the spot for decades. The current church the one you see today is a far cry from the original Albazinian construction.
The consecration ceremony in 2009 marked a momentous occasion. Bishop Mark Golovkov led the grand consecration. The church was a gift. A gift to the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos.
