What does “Who is like God?” mean to you? That is the meaning of Saint Michael. Here before us stands 圣弥额尔天主堂 in Beijing. Also known as St. Michael’s Church, it is a testament to faith and architectural beauty.
圣弥额尔天主堂 is the smallest Catholic church in Beijing. Its history is relatively short compared to the other major churches in the city. Yet, its story is rich with cultural and historical significance.
In 1901, after the Boxer Rebellion, Europeans living in the Legation Quarter wanted a local church. Bishop Pierre-Marie-Alphonse Favier and the French Minister negotiated for land. The French Ministry funded the project and Father Gao Jiali took charge of construction. Later, a Frenchman named Xin Liguo oversaw the building work. By 1904, the church was complete.
Initially, 圣弥额尔天主堂 served mainly foreigners in Beijing. Both the priests were French. The church was under the management of the French Catholic Church. After 1949, the Catholic Church of Beijing took over the property. It was then managed by the North Church.
However, in 1958, the church closed. The government confiscated the building. It became a hall for the nearby Taijichang Elementary School. Thankfully, the structure remained mostly intact.
In 1986, the school moved out. The church was returned to the Beijing Catholic Church. By December 23, 1989, 圣弥额尔天主堂 reopened. In October 1995, it became a protected historical site. Even U.S. President Bill Clinton visited for prayer.
The church showcases Gothic architecture. It stands two stories tall. Inside, wooden structures support ribbed vaults. Round pillars and floral-tiled floors add to its charm. Originally, French-made stained glass windows adorned the sides. Sadly, many were broken when the elementary school occupied the building. Above the main entrance, you’ll see a statue. It depicts St. Michael, protector of the Israelites. The angel’s image is a highlight, known for its fine details.
圣弥额尔天主堂 also features unique Chinese elements. A two-story rectory and ten-room offices stand to the north and east. These structures blend Western design with traditional Beijing residential styles.
Today, 圣弥额尔天主堂 welcomes all. Services are held in Chinese, Korean and English. This church represents a blend of cultures. It stands as a symbol of faith and resilience in Beijing. Notice how the church faces north to south. This is another unusual feature of the church. It is different from the traditional east-to-west orientation.
