Have you ever wondered how a simple chapel could become a cornerstone of a city’s faith? Stand here, in front of the Enguang Church, once known as the S\u00ef-Shen-Ts\u00ef Methodist Church in Chengdu. This place, nestled on Sishengci North Street, holds a special place in the city’s heart. Built in 1894 by the Canadian Methodist Mission, it was the first church in Chengdu – a testament to the early roots of Christianity in this vibrant region.

The Enguang Church was more than just a place of worship; it was a symbol of hope. The church was designed by Walter Small, a Victoria University graduate nicknamed the “Mission’s Builder”. Its walls were made of solid brick, and its semi-native style with board floors could seat three hundred people. But its story isn’t without hardship. It was destroyed the very next year by anti-religious turmoil, only to be rebuilt and demolished again during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Enguang Church endured and thrived. Its influence resonated throughout the Jinjiang District, transforming the area from a comparatively poor region into a vibrant community. The church was doubled in size in 1911 with a generous gift of $1,000 in gold from Jairus Hart of Halifax, N.S. Today, this grand building stands as a testament to its unwavering spirit. It is a place where faith has weathered storms and emerged stronger, a beacon of hope in the heart of Chengdu.
