The calm waters of Garyu Pond reflect the serene beauty of Enkoji Temple, its history steeped in the past. This temple was founded in 1601 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as the Rakuyo School for the flourishing of knowledge in Japan. This was an open-minded place of learning, attracting artists and writers, and later even serving as a seminary for women. The temple features a mesmerizing bamboo forest, offering a quieter alternative to Arashiyama, just behind the garden pond. It even boasts a musical ornament, a suikinkutsu, which, when a water drop lands in its hidden pot, emits a calming bell sound, adding to the tranquility of the temple grounds. As you enter the temple, make sure to notice the unique rock garden called “Honryu-tei” that, with its jutting rocks, represents a flying dragon. The other garden, filled with maples, becomes a blaze of fiery red and orange in autumn. There’s even a small hill affording panoramic views of Kyoto’s mountains.
