“Did you ever hear of a bridge that witnessed the transformation of a city from a bustling port to a vibrant electronics hub?” Right here, before us, stands the Nihonbashi bridge. Nihonbashi bridge isn’t just a crossing over the Dotonbori River, it’s a living testament to Osaka’s ever-evolving spirit. The Nihonbashi bridge we see today, a sturdy structure, is a far cry from its wooden predecessor. That original Nihonbashi bridge, dating back to the Edo period, measured about 40 meters long and 7 meters wide. It was the heart of “Nagamachi”, a bustling post town where land and water transport converged. Imagine the scene: merchants hawking their wares, boats laden with goods arriving at the wharf at the foot of the Nihonbashi bridge, and the shogunate’s notice board, the Kousatsuba, displaying official decrees. The Nihonbashi bridge area was always a hive of activity. Fast forward to the Meiji period, and the area around Nihonbashi bridge transformed into a haven for book lovers, becoming a prominent second-hand bookstore district. Then, after the war, a new era dawned. Stores selling radio parts and tools began to sprout up around Nihonbashi bridge, laying the foundation for what would become “Den-den Town,” Osaka’s famed electronics district. While the Nihonbashi bridge itself was rebuilt in 1969 to accommodate the subway, remnants of the past still linger. The main pillars of the old wooden bridge remain at its foot, silent witnesses to centuries of change. So, as you cross the Nihonbashi bridge today, remember, you’re not just traversing a bridge, you’re walking through time. You’re stepping over the echoes of merchants, booksellers, and electronics enthusiasts. The Nihonbashi bridge is a tangible link to Osaka’s rich and vibrant past, a bridge between eras.
