A jade urn weighing 3500 kg. That’s the Round City’s most impressive treasure. Can you imagine its journey?

Welcome to the Round City a hidden gem within Beijing’s Beihai Park. This small circular island was once part of the larger Taiye Lake. For centuries it served as a secluded imperial garden. Its history stretches back to the Jin Dynasty. Emperor Shizong began constructing palaces here between 1163 and 1179.

The Round City is a marvel of imperial architecture. Its walls stand five meters high enclosing 4500 square meters. The main building is the Chengguang Hall. This square hall is covered in vibrant yellow glazed tiles. Inside rests a remarkable jade Buddha. A gift from Burma to Empress Dowager Cixi. The Buddha’s left arm bears a scar. A chilling reminder of the Eight-Power Allied Forces’ invasion in 1900. They looted the Round City stealing countless treasures.

But the Round City holds more than just the Jade Buddha. The massive jade urn I mentioned earlier is another highlight. It’s said to have originated from the mythical Place in the Moon. Or perhaps left by the Goddess Nuwa. Kublai Khan used it as a wine vessel. Later it was lost and even used as a food container. Emperor Qianlong rediscovered it and placed it in the Round City. He even wrote a poem and a song about this impressive treasure.

The Round City isn’t just a repository of history. It’s a beautiful space that offers serenity and reflection. Imagine the emperors and empresses strolling through its serene gardens. Picture them enjoying the quiet moments far from the bustling court. Now you too can appreciate its timeless charm.

The Round City a testament to Beijing’s rich imperial past. A place where history art and legend intertwine. It offers a glimpse into a world of emperors treasures and untold stories. Leaving you with a sense of wonder and admiration for this special place.
