Envision yourself transported back to 1924, to the bustling city of Guangzhou. The grand building before you, 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓), once a luxurious garden villa, stands as a testament to a turbulent era. Confiscated after the suppression of a merchant rebellion, the 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓) became the headquarters of the Guangdong Provincial Peasant Association. From within these very walls, peasant movements that shook the province were orchestrated. The year 1925 marked a pivotal moment in the building’s history. The first Guangdong Provincial Peasant Representatives’ Congress was held in Guangzhou, giving birth to the Guangdong Provincial Peasant Association. The association, operating from the 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓), played a crucial role in supporting the Northern Expedition, a military campaign aimed at unifying China. Key figures like Peng Pai, Zhou Qiang, and Luo Qi-yuan frequented the 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓), guiding the burgeoning peasant movement. Even Mao Zedong, during his time at the Fifth Peasant Movement Training Institute, worked and resided in a small room on the second floor of this building. It was here that he penned his influential work, “Analysis of the Classes in Chinese Peasantry and Their Attitudes towards Revolution.” The 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓) also served as a training ground for future revolutionaries. In early 1926, the Communist Party of China held training classes here. Leading up to the Northern Expedition, regular meetings took place in the building’s auditorium. Reports on military affairs and peasant movements were delivered, shaping the course of the revolution. In August 1926, the second enlarged meeting of the Executive Committee of the Provincial Peasant Association convened at the 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓), further solidifying its influence. Tragically, the building’s vibrant history was cut short in 1927. The Kuomintang’s crackdown led to the severe persecution of the Peasant Association. The association, along with its subordinate organizations, ceased operations. Today, the 國民政府廣東省政府舊址(門樓), now home to the Guangzhou Yuexiu District Education Bureau’s Logistics Industry Management Service Center, has been largely preserved, bearing witness to the struggles and triumphs of a bygone era. In October 2019, this remarkable structure was added to the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
