Hidden within Osaka’s Kita-ku, near Keihan Mori-Koji Station, rests the Kichijo Jizo-son, Enmei Jizo-son, and Nodaji Jizo-son. These three Jizo statues, nestled in the Mori-Koji East Park, offer a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The statues themselves are relatively new, offering a fresh perspective on this timeless figure of compassion. Kichijo Jizo-son, with its large-eyed, moai-like appearance, stands out with a charming kawaii aesthetic.

Enmei Jizo-son holds a unique position, facing south, opposite the traditional placement of Jizo statues. This unconventional orientation adds to its mystique. Praying before Enmei Jizo-son is believed to grant significant benefits and good fortune. Legend says that this Jizo appeared from the sea at Osaka Minami-tsu (present-day Kita-ku) and promised to protect the people and alleviate suffering. The statue’s unconventional placement reflects its role as a protector, watching over those who seek its solace.

Nodaji Jizo-son represents the culmination of a local tradition. Residents from the surrounding twenty households gather annually to elect a “Jizo-to”, a caretaker for the statue. They share stories and discuss the Jizo’s significance, fostering a strong sense of community. The statue’s colorful attire, with its purple, red, yellow, and light blue fabrics, adds a vibrant touch to this sacred space. It’s a testament to the community’s deep reverence for Jizo.

The three Jizo statues of Mori-Koji East Park, Kichijo Jizo-son, Enmei Jizo-son, and Nodaji Jizo-son, represent different facets of this beloved Buddhist figure.
