Nestled amidst the tranquil beauty of Shigamiyama Park in Suita City, stands the Kishibe Shrine Stele. A silent sentinel, it whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Kishibe Shrine Stele marks a place of ancient reverence, steeped in the echoes of centuries past. The Kishibe Shrine itself, located on the slopes of Mount Shigami, has been a spiritual heart of the community since time immemorial. Legend tells us that during the reign of Emperor Sujin, a grand shrine was established here, sent from Yamato and known as the “Great Shrine”.

The very name “Kishibe,” meaning “riverbank,” speaks to the shrine’s geographical significance. Originally situated near the coastline, the area gradually transformed as land rose, leaving the shrine nestled on the mountain’s gentle slopes. This shift mirrors the shrine’s own journey through time. The Kishibe Shrine has witnessed eras of peace and prosperity, as well as periods of turmoil and destruction.

Kishibe Shrine Stele itself holds a particular poignancy. It represents not just the shrine, but its remarkable recovery from tragedy. In 2008, a devastating fire, the cause of which remains a mystery to this day, consumed the main hall of Kishibe Shrine. A structure dating back to 1610, a rare “seven-room company” style, and designated as an Important Cultural Property, was reduced to ashes. This loss was a heavy blow to the community.

Yet, from the ashes, a new chapter began. The Kishibe Shrine Stele stands as a testament to the spirit of renewal that followed. Thanks to meticulous records, half a year of investigation, and the unwavering support of parishioners and the local community, the shrine was painstakingly rebuilt in 2011. The reconstructed main hall faithfully replicates the original seven-room company design, including the intricate details of its Momoyama-style ornamentation.

But the Kishibe Shrine Stele isn’t just a marker of reconstruction. It’s a symbol of enduring faith and cultural heritage. Every year on October 17th, a unique festival called “Donji” takes place at the shrine. This traditional ceremony involves processions from surrounding villages, bringing offerings to the shrine. Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Suita City, Donji connects the present with the past. The Kishibe Shrine Stele stands as a witness to this unbroken chain of tradition, a silent testament to the enduring spirit of Kishibe Shrine. It invites us to reflect on the power of resilience, the importance of community, and the beauty of rebirth.
