“House of the monk who loved pine flowers.” That is the meaning of Shokado. We stand before the 史跡 松花堂およびその跡 Stele. This stele marks a site of great historical and cultural importance. It commemorates Shokado Shojo a remarkable figure from the early Edo period.

Shokado Shojo was not just any monk. He was a tea master artist and one of the top three calligraphers of his time. Born in 1584 he lived until 1639. His influence on Japanese culture is still felt today. The 史跡 松花堂およびその跡 Stele stands as a reminder of his contributions.

As a teenager Shokado Shojo entered monastic life on Mt. Otokoyama. He rose to become the chief abbot of Takimotobo. This was once part of the vast Iwashimizu Hachimangu shrine-temple complex. He fostered connections with artists nobles and even the imperial family. His tea gatherings were renowned bringing together the cultural elite.

In his mid-fifties Shokado Shojo retired. He moved to the nearby Izumibo Temple. In 1637 he built a small thatched-roof hermitage. He named it Shokado. This hermitage served as both his residence and a tea house. There he continued to host gatherings and engage in intellectual discussions.

This happened after the government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. They were moved several times before finding their current home in the Shokado Garden.

Today the hermitage and its tea garden are National Historic Sites. The Shokado Garden itself is a National Place of Scenic Beauty. When you visit the garden imagine Shokado Shojo walking these paths. He would have been enjoying the same lush landscape. He would have been contemplating art and philosophy.

The Shokado Garden boasts diverse flora. There are plum blossoms cherry blossoms green maple trees and autumn leaves. Over 40 kinds of bamboo and nearly 300 camellia trees add to the garden’s charm. The Shokado Museum of Art is located next to the garden. It exhibits artworks related to Shokado Shojo.

Consider visiting the tea rooms Matsukage Baikyo and Takekage. Reflect on the artistic spirit of Shokado Shojo. He found beauty in simplicity. His legacy lives on through the 史跡 松花堂およびその跡 Stele. It also lives on in the garden and museum that bear his name. This is a place where history art and nature converge.
