Tucked away in Toyonaka, Osaka, the 春日大社南郷目代今西氏屋敷 Stele whispers tales of centuries past. This unassuming stone marker, designated a historic site in 2009, stands as a testament to the Ima Nishi family and their connection to the powerful Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The Ima Nishi family, originally from Nara, managed the shrine’s vast Tarumi Nishimaki estate. This estate, gifted to Kasuga Taisha in 1183, stretched across several present-day Toyonaka districts. The Ima Nishi, serving as mokudai (deputies), oversaw the estate’s operations. Their presence here marked a shift, as they transitioned from shrine family in Nara to estate managers in Osaka. Known as the “Nango Mokudai” during the Muromachi period, the Ima Nishi family’s influence waned by the late 16th century. Yet, they remained in the area, serving as doctors and Shinto priests. The 春日大社南郷目代今西氏屋敷 Stele isn’t just about a family. It’s a window into the complex history of land ownership, religious power, and the changing roles of prominent families. The stele marks a residence, enclosed by a two-cho (216-meter square) moat. Within, a main house built in 1711 and the Nango Kasuga Shrine, relocated from Nara in 1746, stand as tangible connections to the past. Archaeological digs have revealed the moat’s age, dating back to the latter half of the 15th century. Sections of the outer two-cho square moat have been confirmed to be even older, dating to the latter half of the 13th century. The Ima Nishi family cemetery, located southwest of the residence within the grounds of Shoin-ji Temple, adds another layer to this historical tapestry. This site, brimming with tangible traces of history, offers a rare glimpse into the lives and influence of those who served Kasuga Taisha. The 春日大社南郷目代今西氏屋敷 Stele, a silent storyteller, awaits you to uncover the secrets held within its stone embrace.
