Lost in time stands a silent witness. This is the 南门城墙残段. It whispers tales of Chengdu’s past.

Let’s journey back. We explore the story etched into these ancient stones.

Chengdu has a rich history. Its city walls saw centuries of change. The 南门城墙残段 reminds us of this.

Chengdu’s city walls began in the early Ming Dynasty. They built upon foundations from the Song and Yuan dynasties. The walls marked Chengdu as a vital city in Southwest China. These were defensive structures.

Frequent wars damaged the walls. The 南门城墙残段 suffered. Repairs happened during the Qing Dynasty under Emperors Kangxi and Yongzheng.

Emperor Qianlong ordered a major renovation in 1783. It cost a fortune. The renovated wall stretched twenty-two and three-eighths of a mile. It featured more than 8122 embrasures and loopholes. There were also four turrets and four cannon towers. The wall reached a height of five zhang.

《Sichuan Tongzhi》details the wall dimensions. It stood three zhang high. The base was one zhang and eight chi thick. The perimeter spanned twenty-two and three-tenths of a mile. There were 5538 embrasures. The wall had four towers and eleven blockhouses. The Qing city had four gates. The east gate was Yinghui. The south was Jiangqiao. The west was Qingyuan. The north was Da’an.

The wall gradually fell into disrepair. It faced constant removal of earth and bricks. People used them for other purposes. This occurred especially during the Cultural Revolution. Much of Chengdu’s city wall disappeared.

Today only a small section of the wall remains. This is the 南门城墙残段. It stands as a reconstruction using old bricks and soil. The 南门城墙残段 symbolizes a witness to Chengdu’s ancient walls.

Some joke that Chengdu now has only a wall. This is the 南门城墙残段. There is also Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, the Wuhou Temple, Wang Jian’s Tomb, and the Xue Tao Well.

The story of the 南门城墙残段 is more than bricks and earth. It echoes the resilience and history of Chengdu. It whispers tales of emperors and commoners. It tells of battles and rebuilding.

The wall reminds us that even fragments hold powerful stories.
