South Nanshuji Temple stands before you. Its history whispers from the very stones. Founded in 1557 it’s a temple of the True Pure Land sect. The temple was established by Miyoshi Nagayoshi. He was a high-ranking official in the region. He built the temple to honor his father and founder.

The original temple was located on the south side of the grounds of the guesthouse. It was destroyed by fire in 1617. It was later rebuilt in its current location. This area is known as Minami-koyo-cho. The present temple was rebuilt in 1653. A mountain gate was built in 1647. It’s called the Higashiyama Gate. The main hall dates from the early Edo period.

Many notable people have shaped the temple’s history. This includes the renowned tea master Sen no Rikyu. He visited and even designed a tea room within the temple. This tea room is called Jissoan. It was rebuilt in 1960. It is known for its beautiful setting. It’s a stunning garden adjacent to the temple. The grounds are especially beautiful during seasonal bloom.

Today South Nanshuji Temple is a place of serenity. It serves as a beacon of faith and tranquility in Osaka. The temple complex is easily accessible by train. It’s a short walk from the Minami-Imai station. Parking is also available on site. While you are there you can reflect on the long and rich history of this special place.
