Originally known as Shinshoji Temple, Minami-Shinkyoji has a fascinating history. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the ever-shifting tides of religious belief in Japan. Minami-Shinkyoji Temple wasn’t always a Buddhist sanctuary. It began in 1307 as a Shinshoji Temple, a place of worship for the Shinshu sect. The temple’s leader, Nichigen, engaged in a theological debate that changed the course of the temple’s history. This debate led to his conversion to Buddhism. Subsequently, he changed the temple’s name to Shinkyoji. Later, in 1654, the priest Nichigyo divided Shinkyoji Temple into two separate entities: Minami-Shinkyoji and Kita-Shinkyoji. Minami-Shinkyoji served as a focal point for local residents and their spiritual practices. Kita-Shinkyoji housed the Kaidei Gakurin, a center of learning and philosophical inquiry. Minami-Shinkyoji Temple holds several significant cultural treasures. The Honored Hokekyo Sutra, an important Buddhist scripture, is housed within its walls. The Hondou (main hall) and Kaisando (founder’s hall) are designated as tangible cultural properties by Kyoto Prefecture. The temple’s grounds are also home to an ancient statue of Amida Nyorai. This statue is a testament to the enduring power of Buddhist iconography and its importance in Japanese culture. Minami-Shinkyoji also plays a vital role in preserving the Mukaikai Nebuta Festival.
