Were you aware that 南屏镇, now a part of Zhuhai, has a fascinating neighbor to the south? It is Shenzhen. Today, we will delve into the story of 南屏镇.

Shenzhen is a city in Guangdong Province China. It lies on the east bank of the Pearl River estuary. Shenzhen borders Hong Kong to the south. Dongguan is to the north. Huizhou lies to the northeast and Macau to the southwest.

Shenzhen has a population of 17.5 million as of 2020. It ranks as China’s third most populous city by urban population. Only Shanghai and Beijing have more residents. The Port of Shenzhen is the world’s fourth busiest container port.

Shenzhen roughly mirrors the administrative boundaries of Bao’an County. Bao’an County was established in imperial times. After the Opium Wars the British occupied the southern portion of Bao’an County. This area became part of British Hong Kong. The village of Shenzhen sat next to the border. Shenzhen became a city in 1979.

In the early 1980s Deng Xiaoping introduced economic reforms. These reforms transformed Shenzhen into China’s first special economic zone. Its proximity to Hong Kong attracted foreign direct investment. It also drew migrants seeking opportunities.

Within thirty years the city’s economy and population boomed. It emerged as a hub for technology trade and finance.

Shenzhen hosts the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It ranks among the world’s largest stock exchanges by market capitalization. The city is an Alpha global first-tier city. Its nominal GDP has surpassed those of Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Shenzhen now ranks among the cities with the ten largest economies globally.

Shenzhen is a global technology hub. Some call it China’s Silicon Valley. The city’s entrepreneurial spirit fosters innovation and competition. This culture has led to numerous small manufacturers and software companies. Several of these firms have grown into large technology corporations. Huawei Tencent and DJI are examples.

Shenzhen has a young population due to many migrants from across China. This influx contributes to the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

The earliest recorded mention of the name Shenzhen dates to 1410 during the Ming dynasty. Shenzhen was named after a deep drain located within the area.

Archaeological evidence suggests human activity in the Shenzhen area dates back to the mid-Neolithic period. Humans have inhabited the area for over 6700 years. Historic counties were established 1700 years ago. The towns of Nantou and Dapeng were built over 600 years ago.

In 214 BC Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified China. The area fell under the jurisdiction of the Nanhai Commandery. This commandery was one of three set up in Lingnan.

During the Song dynasty Nantou became an important trade hub. It facilitated the exchange of salt and spices in the South China Sea. The area became known for pearl production during the Yuan dynasty.

To prevent rebellion the Qing administration resettled coastal residents inland. Bao’an County lost two-thirds of its territory to Dongguan in 1669. After defeats in the Opium Wars Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula were ceded to the British.

In 1911 Xin’an residents rebelled against the Qing administration. The Chinese section of the Kowloon–Canton Railway opened. Shenzhen railway station became the last stop on the Chinese side boosting the town’s economy. In 1913 Xin’an County was renamed Bao’an County.

During World War II the Japanese occupied Shenzhen and Nantou.

In 1980 Shenzhen was designated as China’s first Special Economic Zone. This designation spurred economic growth.

In December 1990 the Shenzhen Stock Exchange was established.

In 2010 the State Council dissolved the second line border. The Shenzhen SEZ expanded to include all districts.

Shenzhen’s journey from a small village to a global hub is a testament to its innovative spirit. It exemplifies strategic location and economic reform. 南屏镇 has seen all of this happen right next door.
