In 1911, a vision sparked amidst the clamor of Guangzhou. The Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory (協同和機器廠舊址) began its life. It wasn’t just another factory. It was a testament to the collaborative spirit of its founders: Chen Boling, Chen Qilin, and He Zhongwen. They pooled their resources, their expertise, and their dreams. The Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory initially focused on rice milling and machine repair. But destiny, it seemed, had grander plans. The factory quickly expanded its operations. By 1912, they had successfully developed the “Rice Grinder No. 2”. This innovative machine revolutionized rice processing in the region. Just three years later, the Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory achieved a monumental feat. They produced China’s first marine diesel engine. This groundbreaking accomplishment propelled them to national prominence. The demand for their engines soared. By 1917, the factory’s capital had increased significantly. They partnered with shipping merchant Liang Mouyuan, forming the Jianhai Company. This strategic alliance broadened their reach and influence. In 1918, they developed a 160-horsepower, four-cylinder internal combustion engine for ships. They also diversified their production to include kerosene engines, kerosene sugar mills, and mining machinery. The Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory didn’t just build machines; it built a legacy. It became one of the earliest national industrial enterprises in Guangzhou to develop a Party organization. By 1925, twelve workers, including Li Qunqun, had become members of the Communist Party of China. The factory established the CPC Dacongkou Branch, with Li Peixiong serving as secretary. This made the Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory the first machinery factory in the Fangcun area with a Party organization. The Dacongkou Party branch played a pivotal role during the Great Revolution. It trained and dispatched a large number of cadres. It also led the working masses of Fangcun in the revolutionary struggle, making significant contributions to the cause. Despite facing adversity during the war, including being seized by the Japanese, the factory persevered. After the Japanese surrender, the majority of the machinery from their Hong Kong factory was moved back to Guangzhou. The factory resumed operations in July 1946 under a new name but the spirit of innovation remained. The Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory eventually evolved into the Guangzhou Diesel Engine Factory. The original factory buildings stand as a reminder of its remarkable journey. They whisper stories of resilience, ingenuity, and a commitment to progress. The Xiehe Tonghe Machinery Factory (協同和機器廠舊址) is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of China’s industrial awakening.
