Dreams of shoppers once filled its vast halls. Today, we stand before the 华南MALL, a place of grand ambition. It stands as a testament to both the boundless dreams and the harsh realities of commerce.

The 华南MALL opened its doors in 2005. It was designed to be a shopper’s paradise. It had space for over 2,350 stores within its 7.1 million square feet. The mall aimed to draw 100,000 visitors each day. The project was led by Alex Hu Guirong. He made his fortune in the instant noodle industry.

Imagine this mall at its peak. A 1.3-mile indoor canal flowed with gondolas. A large Egyptian sphinx stood guard. An 1800-foot indoor roller coaster thrilled visitors. The 华南MALL featured seven zones. These zones were themed after international locations. Amsterdam, California, and the Caribbean were all represented. Egypt, Paris, Rome, and Venice completed the set. An 82-foot replica of the Arc de Triomphe added to the spectacle. A replica of Venice’s St. Mark’s bell tower stood tall. Even the first licensed Teletubby theme park found a home here.

Despite its grandeur the 华南MALL struggled. It was located on old farmland in Dongguan. Dongguan lacked a major airport or convenient public transport. Many developers and planned occupants withdrew. The mall faced economic challenges. Dongguan was a factory town. Many residents lacked the time or money for shopping and entertainment.

Over the years, the 华南MALL became known as the largest abandoned mall in the world. At one point, 99% of its stores were vacant. However, hope was not entirely lost. A re-launch occurred in 2007. It was renamed “New South China Mall, Living City.”

Some businesses did manage to survive. Fast food chains like McDonald’s, KFC, and Pizza Hut remained. A IMAX theater and an outdoor amusement park drew some crowds especially on weekends.

Today, maintenance crews work to maintain the property. They struggle to keep up with the demands of such a massive complex. The snaking canal turned green and swampy. Decorations faded. Some areas fell into disrepair.

In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the 华南MALL. Renovations aimed to attract middle-class shoppers. More experience-based entertainment was added. The mall’s occupancy rate has reportedly increased.

The story of the 华南MALL is a complex one. It is a story of ambition, failure, and resilience. It reminds us that even the grandest dreams can face unexpected challenges. As we leave this place let us reflect on the lessons it holds. The 华南MALL is a monument to the ever-changing landscape of commerce and culture.
