Beijing wasn’t always called “Beijing.” Before 1403 it bore names like Jicheng and Yanjing. It was also known as Nanjing. Other names included Zhongdu and Dadu. Beiping was another. “Beijing” meaning “Northern Capital” became its 16th name.

The city is a cultural hub with unique architecture and arts. Beijing’s cuisine is also special. Think of the roast duck.

Did you know Beijing is China’s second-largest city? Its municipality houses over 22.5 million people. This is within an area of 16800 square kilometers. Shanghai is bigger.

Beijing is also a major gateway. Its international airport is the world’s second busiest. Many use it to enter and exit China. A 10-day visa-free policy makes visiting easier for some travelers.

The best times to visit are May and October. Beijing experiences temperature extremes. The highest recorded temperature is 42 degrees Celsius. The lowest is -27 degrees Celsius. Spring and fall offer more comfortable weather.

The air quality in Beijing is improving. Efforts have reduced pollution in recent years.

Beijing has been the capital for about 700 years. Six ancient dynasties including the Yuan Ming and Qing empires ruled from here. These were the largest and most powerful.

Emperor Qin seized Jin City which is now Beijing in 226 BC. The Sui Dynasty built the Grand Canal. It linked Beijing to central China.

Kublai Khan made Beijing the capital of the Yuan Empire in 1272. He called it Dadu. The Ming Dynasty renamed it Beiping. Emperor Yongle then renamed it Beijing in 1403.

The Forbidden City was built during the Ming Dynasty. Beijing became the Qing Dynasty capital in 1644.

In 1860 English and French troops occupied Beijing. The Old Summer Palace was burned down. The Boxer Rebellion saw foreign troops occupy Beijing again in 1900.

Beijing became the capital of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
