Gazing up at the towering cliffs of Qianling Mountain Tiankeng, one can’t help but feel a sense of awe. Qianling Mountain Tiankeng isn’t just a hole in the ground. It’s a portal to another world, a world of lush vegetation, rare animals, and an underground river that has carved its way through the earth for millennia. Qianling Mountain Tiankeng, also known as the “Heavenly Pit,” is a sinkhole located in Fengjie County, Chongqing Municipality in China. It is the world’s deepest sinkhole, a doubly nested structure that plunges to depths of 511 to 662 meters. The sheer scale of this natural wonder is breathtaking. Imagine standing at the rim, looking down into the abyss. The upper bowl descends 320 meters, and then another 342 meters to the lower bowl. A sloping ledge separates the two, created by soil trapped within the limestone. During the rainy season, a waterfall cascades down into the sinkhole, adding to the drama of the landscape. Qianling Mountain Tiankeng has been known to locals for centuries. “Xiaozhai,” meaning “little village,” refers to a nearby abandoned village. “Tiankeng,” meaning “Heavenly Pit,” is a regional term for sinkholes in China. A testament to human ingenuity, a 2,800-step staircase has been built to allow visitors to descend into the depths. This staircase offers a unique opportunity to experience the microcosm within the sinkhole. Deep beneath Qianling Mountain Tiankeng flows the Difeng River, the architect of this natural wonder. This powerful underground river originates in the Tianjin fissure gorge and flows beneath the sinkhole before emerging as a dramatic 46-meter waterfall. This 8.5-kilometer-long river descends 364 meters within the cave system, with an average annual flow of 8.77 cubic meters per second. At its peak, the flow rate can reach a staggering 174 cubic meters per second. The river and Difeng Cave were explored and mapped in 1994 by the China Caves Project, revealing the intricate network of underground passages. Qianling Mountain Tiankeng is not just a geological marvel. It is a vibrant ecosystem. Over 1,285 species of plants, including the ginkgo tree, thrive in its unique microclimate. Rare animals, such as the clouded leopard and the Chinese giant salamander, also call this place home. As you stand at the rim of Qianling Mountain Tiankeng, take a moment to appreciate the forces of nature that shaped this breathtaking landscape. The slow, steady work of water over millions of years has created a wonder that inspires awe and wonder.
