Ten Thousand Flowers Garden a haven of art and history. Nestled within Guangzhou’s bustling Haizhu District this tranquil oasis holds a significant place in the city’s cultural heritage. Shixiang Garden as it’s also known was built in 1856. Its name Ten Thousand Flowers Garden originates from the variety of fragrant blooms once adorning its grounds including jasmine and clover. This wasn’t just any garden. It served as the home and studio of renowned Lingnan School of Painting masters Gao Jianfu and Chen Shuren often referred to as “the Two Gao”.
Their innovative “wet-ink splash” technique revolutionized traditional Chinese painting. They elevated it to new heights. The garden became a hub for artistic creation and education. Gao and Chen generously supported promising but financially struggling students. They even sold their paintings to help them. Famous painter Guan Shanyue was one such recipient. He later became part of the Lingnan School’s “Three Masters”.
Shixiang Garden’s influence extended far beyond its walls. Numerous artists and teachers emerged from its embrace. They shaped the course of Lingnan painting. The garden’s legacy continues to inspire. It remains a testament to the spirit of artistic innovation and generosity. The garden’s art galleries once hosted frequent exhibitions. Today Shixiang Garden Memorial Hall stands as a tribute to this rich past.
The hall opened in 2007 expanding in 2010. It showcases the life and works of Gao and Chen. Visitors can explore three ordinary-looking houses. One was the studio. Another was their living quarters. The layout retains its original charm. Inside the memorial hall you’ll see inscriptions. One reads “Gao and Chen’s memories”. It is inscribed on stone. It serves as a poignant reminder of their bond. The garden’s tranquil atmosphere invites reflection. It’s a place to appreciate the beauty of art and the enduring impact of legacy. Ten Thousand Flowers Garden is more than just a place.
