Clutching my grandfather’s worn leather flight cap, I first heard tales of Beijing Liangxiang Airport. He, a seasoned pilot, spoke of its enigmatic presence. Beijing Liangxiang Airport wasn’t a place for commercial flights. It was a training ground for China’s naval air force, a place shrouded in secrecy. Today, we stand on the periphery of this mysterious airfield. Beijing Liangxiang Airport is located southwest of Beijing’s bustling city center. It’s a military airport, primarily used for training naval pilots. Rumors abound about its dual-purpose nature. Some say Shenzhen Airlines and US Mesa Airlines once planned a joint venture here. This would have transformed the military airfield into a hub for both military and civilian operations. Imagine the roar of commercial jets intermingling with the sharp whine of training aircraft. This intriguing possibility adds another layer to the mystique of Beijing Liangxiang Airport. While we can’t venture onto the grounds, we can appreciate its unique role in China’s aviation history.
