Established in 1984, Beijing Nationality University, or Beimin University as it’s often called, stands as a testament to a unique chapter in Chinese educational history. This private institution, once vibrant with the dreams of thousands of students, now echoes with the silence of closure. Beijing Nationality University began as a non-profit, full-time private higher education institution. It was approved by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. The campus, spanning 419 acres, housed over 120,000 square meters of buildings. At its peak, Beijing Nationality University boasted a diverse student body of over 2,000 students. This included representatives from over 30 ethnic minority groups. In fact, these minorities comprised 20% of the student population. This vibrant mix added to the unique character of Beimin University. However, shadows began to creep over the university. In 2018, reports surfaced about irregularities in the university’s admission practices. The Beijing Municipal Education Commission issued a notice. Beijing Nationality University was ordered to halt student recruitment. This marked the beginning of the end for the institution. The situation worsened. In October 2021, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission announced the revocation of the university’s permit. Along with nine other private institutions, Beijing Nationality University was deemed non-compliant with regulations. The final blow came on December 20, 2021. Beijing Nationality University officially ceased operations. The once bustling campus fell silent. The story of Beijing Nationality University is a poignant reminder of the ever-changing landscape of Chinese education. It’s a story of ambition, diversity, and ultimately, of loss.
