Craving a walk on the wild side? Right this way to Chengdu Zoo. It is more than just a place to see animals. Chengdu Zoo is a conservation hub.

Founded in 1953, the zoo first opened as Baihuatan Zoo. In 1976, it moved to its current location. It was then officially named Chengdu City Zoo. Later in 2010, it was renamed Chengdu Zoo. Today, it is the largest zoo in Southwest China. It ranks among the top ten zoos nationwide.

Spread across 17.73 hectares, Chengdu Zoo houses around 3,000 animals. These animals represent about 300 different species. The zoo is home to many rare and endangered wild animals. See mammals, reptiles, birds and ornamental fish.

Chengdu Zoo is recognized for its conservation efforts. The UN Environment Program awarded it the “Global 500 Best” in 1989. It also serves as a wildlife rescue center. The zoo actively breeds and researches wildlife.

The zoo’s layout is divided into four main areas. In the north, you can find the Goldfish Venue, Amphibious Reptile Venue and Bird Garden. The central part features the Panda Venue, Golden Monkey Venue and Bear Mountain. Further in, the Giraffe Venue, Elephant Pavilion and Hippo Venue await you. Finally, the Penguin Venue is located in the west.

Giant pandas are undoubtedly the stars here. The Panda House is the zoo’s largest building. It offers spacious enclosures for these beloved creatures. Chengdu Zoo has been very successful with panda artificial insemination. This has led to many panda births over the years. Currently ten pandas laze away their days in the Panda House.

The Golden Monkey House is another highlight. Completed in 2007, it mimics the natural environment. Here lives a family of Sichuan golden monkeys. These playful creatures are a delight to watch.

Don’t miss the Mandrill House. Rebuilt in 2011, it houses various primate species. The zoo has a large group of mandrills. In fact, it ranks first among zoos in China for its mandrill population.

Chengdu Zoo has received many accolades. It was awarded “Global 500” by the UN. The China Association of Science and Technology named it a “National Science Popularization Education Base”.

Remember a few rules during your visit. Children must be supervised. Do not feed or tease the animals. Pets, skates and bicycles are not allowed inside.

Whether you are a local or a tourist, Chengdu Zoo offers an unforgettable experience. It is a place to appreciate wildlife. It is a place to learn about conservation. Enjoy your visit to Chengdu Zoo.
