Ever wondered what secrets the oldest zoo in China holds? Step into Beijing Zoo a place where history and wildlife intertwine. Founded in 1906 during the late Qing dynasty this zoo isn’t just a collection of animals. It’s a living testament to China’s rich past.

Imagine the Imperial Ministry for Agriculture Industry and Commerce establishing an experimental farm on this very spot. Two gardens Leshan and Ji and two temples Guangshan and Huining once stood here. The farm’s menagerie a small 1.5 hectares became the earliest public zoo in China. Animals arrived from Germany purchased by the Viceroy of Liangjiang Duanfang. The zoo’s opening in 1908 attracted huge crowds each paying eight copper coins for entry. Even the Empress Dowager Cixi and the Guangxu Emperor visited twice.

The zoo wasn’t immune to the turbulence of history. During the Second Sino-Japanese War the Japanese occupiers poisoned six lions and two leopards. They feared the animals might interfere with air defenses. Many other animals perished from starvation. By war’s end only a handful remained ten monkeys rabbits geese and a few birds.

After 1949 when Beijing became the capital of the People’s Republic of China the zoo was rebuilt. It received animals from across the globe. The Moscow Zoo and Leipzig Zoo donated animals including African lions polar bears and emus. The giant panda a national treasure made its debut in 1955. The zoo successfully bred pandas in 1963 a major achievement.

The Beijing Zoo today isn’t just about pandas. It boasts an impressive collection of rare and endangered animals endemic to China. Giant pandas red pandas golden snub-nosed monkeys South China tigers and the Chinese giant salamander call this place home. The zoo’s grounds resemble a classical Chinese garden with flower beds streams and hills dotted with pavilions.

Beyond the animals Beijing Zoo holds architectural treasures. Changguanlou a Baroque-style palace built for the Empress Dowager Cixi remains a stunning example of Western-style architecture in China. Explore the zoo’s Qing dynasty buildings a captivating blend of nature and history.
