Whispers of ambition and dreams of prosperity. That’s what draws people to Shusse Inari Shrine here in Kyoto. Shusse Inari Shrine, the shrine of “worldly success,” holds a captivating tale. It’s a story of ambition, relocation, and the enduring human desire for good fortune. The Shusse Inari Shrine began its journey in the opulent Jurakudai residence of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1587, Hideyoshi, a lifelong devotee of Inari deities, established this shrine as a testament to his faith. He enshrined Ukanomitama, the deity of prosperity and success, within his lavish home. A year later, Emperor Goyōzei visited Jurakudai. He paid his respects at the shrine. Impressed by Hideyoshi’s meteoric rise to power, the Emperor bestowed upon the shrine the name “Shusse Inari” – Prosperity Inari. Jurakudai’s grandeur eventually faded, and the residence was dismantled. Yet, Shusse Inari Shrine remained. It stood on its original grounds until 1663. Then, it was moved to the west of Nijō Castle along Senbon Street, a location believed to have once been the Ōtenmon, the main gate to the Daigokuden of Heian-kyō’s palace. Over the centuries, Shusse Inari became a magnet for those seeking success. Feudal lords, nobles, and commoners alike offered their prayers. During the late Edo period, the shrine’s grounds were adorned with over 300 vibrant torii gates. Each one a testament to the hopes and dreams of its donor. Even in the modern era, the shrine’s connection to success persisted. The surrounding area became a hub for the burgeoning film industry. Notable figures like Makino Shōzō and Onoe Matsunosuke contributed their own torii gates, linking their aspirations with the shrine’s legacy. Time took its toll on the shrine. The cost of maintaining the aging structure became a burden. Lacking official designation as a cultural property, the shrine’s precincts were sold. In 2012, Shusse Inari Shrine embarked on another journey, relocating to its present home here in Ōhara, Sakyo Ward. Though its location has changed, its essence remains. Shusse Inari Shrine continues to whisper promises of success, drawing those who seek a touch of good fortune.
