Once Guangzhou’s vital food storage hub, the Chongkou Warehouse now stands reborn. It is not just a relic of the past. It is a testament to Guangzhou’s innovative spirit. Let me tell you its story.
In the 1950s this area was Guangzhou’s crucial granary. The Chongkou Warehouse played a significant role in ensuring the city’s food security. Fast forward to the 21st century. The warehouses stood as silent witnesses to Guangzhou’s rapid modernization. They risked being forgotten.
Enter DOMANI East-Cang Construction. This design unit saw potential. They envisioned a transformation that would respect the past. It would embrace the future. In January 2022 the renovated Chongkou Warehouse opened its doors. It covers 5000 square meters. The building became the Guangzhou Poly Dragon Bay City parlor.
The design team faced a challenge. How do you revitalize a near century-old structure? How do you avoid turning it into a sterile historical exhibit? Their answer was “protective revitalization”. The core is revitalization. Protection is the approach. The team retained the original architectural identity. They integrated modern steel structures.
The original warehouse complex comprised three identical structures. Each measured 13 by 45 meters. They stood in a row with 10-meter intervals. The team expanded horizontally. They created public spaces for visitors. These spaces complemented the main exhibition and conference areas. A fourth warehouse was connected via a corridor. This became an annex with reception capabilities.
The architects chose bold design techniques. They used large-span steel structures. They installed all-slope顶玻璃幕墙 systems. These choices echoed Chongkou Warehouse’s original industrial roots. The steel structure avoids direct contact with the original building.
The design incorporates a striking centerpiece. It is a restored wooden frame from the original warehouse roof. This element bridges past and present. When a functional structure turns into art its essence shifts. Structure is practical. Art serves inner faith. The frame hangs suspended. It interacts with visitors.
The project team also carefully considered materials. They opted for understated materials. They let the historical narrative take center stage. The central installation embodies a spirit of modernity.
Before its transformation Chongkou Warehouse served as a small commodity storage facility for eight years. Minimal renovations occurred. The current design team wanted public engagement.
John Ruskin wrote of architecture’s glory. It evokes deep emotion. He spoke of years of wear. He missed the need for distance and perspective. People need distance from history. Technology helps us feel safe in the present. We can appreciate the past.
The revitalization of Chongkou Warehouse embodies this tension. It balances old and new. It offers a space to reflect. It allows us to appreciate Guangzhou’s past. It gives us the opportunity to embrace its future.
