“Righteousness.” That single word encapsulates the spirit of Guanyue Temple. This temple stands as a testament to Guan Yu. He was a general known for his loyalty and bravery during the Three Kingdoms period.

Guanyue Temple began as a Guandi Temple. It was dedicated solely to Guan Yu. This revered hero served under Liu Bei. Later in 1914, Yue Fei was added. Yue Fei was a military general known for his patriotism. The temple was then renamed Guanyue Temple. This celebrated Yue Fei’s inclusion.

Though small at 1294 square meters, Guanyue Temple impresses. It is a symmetrical three-hall complex. Exquisite ornamentation marks it as special. Vivid carvings and porcelain figures adorn its structure. This makes it a significant folk religion site. Tourists and pilgrims seek cultural connection here. They also find spiritual solace.

Inside Guanyue Temple, the scent of incense fills the air. The rich textures of clay deities create a transcendent atmosphere. This shows the profound intersection of faith and art.

Let’s explore the Wucheng Hall. It is also known as the Hall of Military Accomplishment. It stands majestically with its timber frame. Inside, Guan Yu and Yue Fei are enshrined. Guan Yu’s reddish-brown face radiates awe. He holds his iconic blade. Yue Fei appears in armor. His gaze is piercing. His hand rests on his sword. Together, they symbolize loyalty and patriotism. Twenty-four illustrious generals flank them. Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun are among them. They represent China’s glorious military history.

Now venture into Chongxian Hall. Also known as the Hall of Venerating Ancestors, it honors Guan Yu’s ancestors. This spans three generations. A large plaque bears the character for righteousness. It was inscribed by Zhu Xi. He was a celebrated Song Dynasty scholar. Stone carvings and poetic couplets enhance the hall. These were crafted by Quanzhou scholars throughout history.

Finally, step into Sanyi Hall. It is also known as the Hall of Sworn Brotherhood. It honors Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. These figures come from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Their oath in the Peach Garden symbolizes loyalty and camaraderie. The temple enshrines them with Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun. Sanyi Hall offers a glimpse into their enduring legacy. It also provides a view into the values they represent.

To get here, take Bus 14 to Guandimiao Station. The temple welcomes visitors all year. It is open from 6:00 to 18:00. Entrance is free.

Guanyue Temple is more than just a historical site. It embodies the values of loyalty, righteousness, and patriotism. These resonate deeply within Chinese culture. As you leave, consider the enduring impact of Guan Yu and Yue Fei. Remember that their stories continue to inspire devotion and respect.
