“A river runs through it,” they say. Here before us flows the Rokken’ya River in Osaka. This waterway has a story etched in its currents. It tells tales of land reclamation and urban development.

The Rokken’ya River stretches 1450 meters. Once it was known as the Rokken’ya River. The river flows through Konohana Ward in Osaka City. It is a branch of the Yodo River system. This system is a class A river.

In 1767 during the Edo period the Rokken’ya River was created. This was part of a land reclamation project. The project aimed to create new rice fields. These fields were called Rokken’ya Shinden. Land was provided within Ajiyakawa levée for compensation. This was for land lost to the river construction.

The Rokken’ya River starts from the Shoonji River. It merges into the Ajikawa River. Downstream from the Kasuga Bridge is Osaka Port’s harbor area.

To protect against high tides the Rokken’ya River floodgate was installed. It prevents flooding from tsunamis. Several bridges cross the Rokken’ya River. These include Ajikawake Bridge and Asahi Bridge. There is also Rokken’ya Bridge and Kasuga Bridge. Finally, there is Ajikawa Ohashi Bridge.

The Rokken’ya River may seem like a simple waterway. It is a vital part of Osaka’s history. This river supported agriculture and transportation. It continues to play a role in the city’s infrastructure today.

The Rokken’ya River is a testament to Osaka’s adaptability. It shows how the city has evolved with its natural environment. The river has transformed over centuries. It has adapted to the needs of its people. The Rokken’ya River is a symbol of Osaka’s resilience.
