Clutching a flickering lantern, a lone figure hurried towards Hachiman Shrine. It was the year 1339. The air crackled with tension. He was Jitsuzon, a prominent monk of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. He sought refuge at Hachiman Shrine in Osaka. He carried a precious scroll, the Tenju Raigou, a portrait of the Buddha Amida. Jitsuzon was fleeing pursuers, followers of his master’s jealous brothers. They wanted the scroll for themselves. They chased him to the Hachiman Shrine. They set fire to the shrine, hoping to force him out. But miraculously, the flames died down. The scroll glowed with an otherworldly light. It declared, “This man shall bring salvation to the western Pure Land.” The pursuers were awestruck. They repented, pledging allegiance to Jitsuzon. From that day forward, Hachiman Shrine became known as Yakezu no Miya, the “Shrine that Would Not Burn.” The shrine was originally dedicated to the sun goddess, Amaterasu. But after this miraculous event, the deity Hachiman, god of war and archery, became the principal deity. This tale marked a shift in Hachiman Shrine’s history. Jitsuzon, seeking to further honor Hachiman, requested a divided spirit of the deity from the Ishikiyomizu Hachiman Shrine in Kyoto. This act solidified Hachiman’s presence at the shrine. It further established Hachiman Shrine as a place of reverence. Years later, another incident further solidified Hachiman’s importance to the shrine and the local community. A devastating plague swept through the region. It claimed the lives of many villagers. The villagers turned to Hachiman Shrine for help. Jitsuzon prayed for their recovery. He performed rituals for seven days and nights. Miraculously, the sick recovered. The grateful villagers, attributing the miracle to Hachiman, moved the enshrined Amaterasu to a subsidiary building. They installed Hachiman as the primary deity. The shrine then officially became Hachiman Jinja, the Hachiman Shrine. This shrine stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and resilience. It echoes with tales of miracles and divine intervention. Even today, priests from Raigōji Temple, founded by Jitsuzon, continue to visit the shrine. They reaffirm the spiritual connection forged centuries ago.
