The school was established in 1972. But its roots go back even further. The area has a long educational history. It began as the Kawachi Country 13th District Village School in 1872. Over the years it went through several name changes. These changes reflect the evolving administrative divisions of the region.

In 1887 it became Yao Ordinary Elementary School. By 1896 it was known as Nakakawachi County Yao Ordinary Elementary School. A higher elementary course was added in 1892. This led to another name change. It became Nakakawachi County Yao Ordinary Higher Elementary School.

By 1936 the school was named Nakakawachi County Yao Daiichi Ordinary Higher Elementary School. In 1941 it transitioned to a national school. It was then called Nakakawachi County Yao Central National School. After the war in 1947 the name changed again. It became Yao Town Yao Central Elementary School. Finally in 1948 it achieved its current name. Yao City Yao Elementary School.

The school also has a unique feature on its grounds. It is called “Kansankan”. This is a building that belonged to a wealthy merchant. His name was Rito Ishida. He was from Yao during the Edo period. The building was originally located elsewhere. It was moved and restored in 1981.

The school’s motto focuses on key principles. It is based on three Japanese words. The first word is “minna”. This encourages challenge with a smile. The second word is “sorezore”. This aims for a safe and secure environment with smiles. The third word is “nobinobi”. This promotes academic improvement through independent learning.
