It’s a thread woven into the rich tapestry of Japanese folklore and Buddhist tradition. Hachidai Ryuo Koryuji Temple stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It is a place where the whispers of history mingle with the rustling leaves.

Hachidai Ryuo Koryuji Temple is deeply connected to the deity Hachidai Ryuo, a protector of Buddhism. The origins of Hachidai Ryuo are steeped in ancient beliefs, predating even the arrival of established religions in Japan. Over time, Hachidai Ryuo became associated with guarding Buddhist teachings.

Mount Ikoma itself, where Hachidai Ryuo Koryuji Temple resides, is steeped in history. It’s mentioned in the “Settsu Meisho Zue”, highlighting its significance in the development of Shugendo. In 658 AD, a monk named En no Gyoja, a key figure in Shugendo, is said to have captured and converted two demons on the mountain, leading them onto the path of Buddhism. This event cemented Mount Ikoma’s status as a sacred place, attracting practitioners and pilgrims alike.

The temple houses a fascinating birdhouse adorned with an inscription mentioning “Hachidai Ryuo”. There’s also a spring within the temple grounds, said to have gushed forth when the revered Buddhist priest Kobo Daishi struck the ground with his staff. This spring, known as “Shiakujo”, continues to flow to this day. Look around. You might notice a building resembling an office within the temple grounds. A closer inspection reveals a birdhouse with carvings of dragons. These dragons symbolize Hachidai Ryuo’s protective presence.

Mount Ikoma, located on the border between Osaka and Nara, holds a unique position. It’s a place where the earthly realm meets the celestial, fostering a sense of connection to the divine. This liminal location made it a natural setting for rain-making rituals, essential for the agricultural society of ancient Japan.
