“Is this really the entrance?” someone whispers. Yes it is! This torii gate on Ubara Beach marks the entrance to the realm of the Shinto gods. This gate leads us to Yasaka Shrine.

Yasaka Shrine in Chiba offers a unique coastal vibe. You often see shrines in mountains. Katsuura City’s shrines, however, are right on the beach.

Let’s step closer to Yasaka Shrine. It is slightly inland. This makes your visit a spiritual expedition to the sea.

Yasaka Shrine has a rich history. It dates back to the late Kamakura period. A warrior named Kitajo Nagatoki built a manor in Matsunogo. He was appointed protector of three provinces. These provinces were Awa, Kazusa and Shimosa. To protect his manor he enshrined Tenno-sama. Tenno-sama was from Hiradai in Kanezawa. He also enshrined a deity from Kyoto’s Yasaka Shrine. This is how Yasaka Shrine was established.

People call it “Matsunogo no Tenno-sama” even now. Locals revere it as a god. They believe it wards off evil.

The main hall shows an old shrine layout. The hall of worship is horizontal. The main shrine stands independently behind it.

The current covering roof dates back to 1894. It is grand in both scale and woodwork. The main shrine has a unique style. Its front roof extends far out. It has a karahafu gable.

Look closely at the carvings. Notice the lion images on the water-drawing rainbow beam. See the lobster carvings on the sea-old rainbow beam. The construction dates back to 1691. The carvings show features of late 17th-century shrine architecture.

Yasaka Shrine stands as a testament to history. It embodies both spiritual and architectural significance. It is a unique place where sea breezes meet ancient traditions. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty.
