Deep in the heart of Kyoto’s Ōharano district, nestled among the rice paddies and whispering willows, lies the Irinō Shrine, or 入野神社 as it’s known locally. This unassuming shrine, tucked away from the bustling tourist trails, holds a special connection to the land and its people. 入野神社 wasn’t always in its current location. Originally, it stood on the very ground where Ōharano Shrine now resides. Four deities, the same ones enshrined at Ōharano Shrine, were worshipped here. One of these, the deity of agriculture, is revered as the protector of the surrounding farmland. The very name “Irinō” speaks to its deep roots in the community. The name translates to “the field where people enter,” a testament to its role as a gathering place. Irinō (入野) was sometimes also called “Hinō” (日野), meaning “sunny field.” Songs and poems have been composed about this area, speaking of its beauty and its significance to the local farmers. As you stand before the 入野神社, imagine the generations of farmers who have come here to pray for bountiful harvests. Picture them making their way through the narrow paths between the rice paddies, their hearts filled with hope. Within the shrine grounds, you’ll find the main hall, a simple, single-room structure surrounded by a wooden fence. A plaque inside reads “Irinō Shrine, enshrined deity Kasuga Daimyōjin.” To the north of the main hall, along a small path, are two smaller shrines. One is dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, the god of crossroads, while the other enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess. To the west, near Saikōji Temple, is a stone monument dedicated to the parents of Zaike Heibei, a local figure who sheltered near the temple. Further exploration of the shrine’s surroundings reveals ancient burial mounds dating back to the latter part of the Kofun period. These silent mounds whisper tales of a time long past, adding another layer of history to this tranquil place. While the annual festivals at 入野神社 are small and local, they hold a special charm. Around February 22nd, a traditional archery ceremony is held. Young men, upon reaching the age of 15, would participate in this ritual, shooting arrows. Today, however, this practice has been discontinued due to the risk of injury. On September 1st, O-sendo-sai, a ritual involving a thousand readings of sutras, takes place. The Irinō Shrine is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the deep connection between the people of Ōharano and the land that sustains them. It’s a place where the whispers of the past mingle with the hopes of the future, creating a sense of peace and continuity that is truly special.
