Kyoto’s Kogen-ji Temple whispers tales of resilience. The temple we stand before has known both peace and the clash of steel. Kogen-ji, a subtemple of Tenryu-ji, was founded in 1429 by Hosokawa Mochiyuki, a powerful figure in the Muromachi Shogunate. The name, Kogen-ji, itself echoes Mochiyuki’s posthumous Buddhist name. Originally nestled at the foot of Mount Ogura, the temple endured fires and misfortune, finally settling at this very spot in 1882. Imagine the samurai of the Choshu Domain in 1864, bivouacked here within Kogen-ji’s walls. As they prepared for an attack on the Imperial Palace, they tested the sharpness of their swords on the wooden pillars of the main hall. Those very marks remain, a tangible reminder of a turbulent past. Kogen-ji houses a remarkable collection of Nihonga paintings, a testament to an unlikely friendship. Takeuchi Seiho, a prominent Nihonga artist, had a close relationship with Kogen-ji’s head priest. When Seiho’s son fell ill, he was offered solace within the temple walls. To brighten the young man’s convalescence, Seiho’s disciples created numerous paintings, now treasured within Kogen-ji. These vibrant works of art, born from compassion, add another layer to the temple’s rich history. Within Kogen-ji’s serene gardens, the echoes of the past mingle with the tranquility of the present, offering a glimpse into the enduring spirit of Kyoto.
