Whispers of ancient wisdom still linger within Koryu-ji Temple. This is the oldest temple in Kyoto a place steeped in history and spiritual significance.

Founded in 603 Koryu-ji stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Prince Shotoku Taishi a pivotal figure in the early spread of Buddhism in Japan donated a precious statue. The statue is a wooden image of Miroku Bosatsu the Bodhisattva Maitreya. Legend speaks of Maitreya’s arrival 5670000000 years after Buddha’s death to save those yet to find enlightenment. This incredible statue is one of Japan’s first registered national treasures.

The temple wasn’t always so serene. Fires in 818 and 1150 devastated the complex. Yet from the ashes Koryu-ji was rebuilt time and time again a symbol of resilience. It’s a story of survival and the unwavering devotion of generations.

Within Koryu-ji’s walls you find more than just architecture. There’s a treasure house called the Reihoden brimming with thousand-year-old statues. Unfortunately photography is prohibited. The atmosphere is one of hushed reverence. You can almost feel the weight of history in the air.

Originally the temple was built by Hata no Kawakatsu. The Hata clan were Korean immigrants who settled in Uzumasa. They introduced the art of sericulture to Japan. Koryu-ji served as their family temple. The Bull Festival a significant event for the temple is currently suspended. However even without it the temple’s grounds exude a powerful sense of place.

A visit to Koryu-ji is a journey through time. It’s a chance to connect with Japan’s rich past and the unwavering spirit of the people who shaped it. A small admission fee grants access to this timeless wonder. Explore the history. Feel the tranquility. Let the spiritual energy of Koryu-ji wash over you.
