“Lost souls seeking solace, eh?” a raspy voice startled me. I turned to see an old woman, eyes twinkling like the lanterns strung across Koshoji Temple. Koshoji Temple is nestled right next to the grand Nishi-Honganji Temple. It’s so close, in fact, that many mistake them for one giant complex. They even share a moat! Koshoji Temple, however, has its own unique story. It’s a Jodo-Shinshu sect temple, like Nishi-Honganji. But Koshoji sprung from a disagreement, a splinter group from Bukkoji Temple. A follower of Rennyo, the “Restorer” of Jodo-Shinshu, named Kyogo, founded Koshoji. He built it right beside Honganji Temple in the late 15th century. This was a bold move. Imagine the whispers and side-eye from the established Honganji followers! Now, look at the Sanmon Gate. Impressive, isn’t it? Beyond it lies the Goei-do Hall. It’s a towering structure, built in 1912, reaching 28 meters high. To its right sits the smaller Amida-do. While these buildings are relatively modern, Koshoji does hold a piece of the past. Tucked away is the Kyozo, built in 1848. It’s a quiet repository of scriptures and temple history. It’s a shame it’s not readily open to the public. Think of the stories those scrolls hold. Koshoji even has lodgings for followers and a study room. It’s a vibrant, living temple, despite being tucked in Nishi-Honganji’s shadow. So, next time you’re admiring Nishi-Honganji, take a moment to appreciate its smaller, but equally fascinating, neighbor: Koshoji Temple. It’s a testament to the enduring power of faith, even amidst disagreements and change.
