The faint scent of incense drifted on the breeze. It mingled with the scent of pine needles as we approached the gate. This, my friends, is Koetsuji Temple. It might not be as flashy as some temples in Kyoto but don’t let that fool you. Koetsuji holds a unique charm. The temple we see today was established in 1656. However, the story of Koetsuji begins long before that, with a man named Hon’ami Koetsu. Koetsu was a renowned artist, not just a painter but a calligrapher, potter, and lacquerware maker. He was a true Renaissance man of Japan’s Edo period. Koetsu received this land from the wealthy art patron, Suminokura Soan. Koetsu moved his family and a collective of artists here. They formed a vibrant artistic community known as Koetsu Village. Wandering the grounds of Koetsuji is like stepping back into that era. You can almost hear the whispers of artists discussing their craft. Look around. You’ll notice seven elegant tea rooms dotting the landscape. They were designed to complement the natural beauty of the surroundings. It’s incredibly peaceful here. It’s a sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of central Kyoto. This tranquil atmosphere makes Koetsuji the perfect place for quiet contemplation.
