It began with a son’s love for his mother. Kozo Kosanji, a successful industrialist, sought to honor his late mother in a truly extraordinary way. He transformed his family estate into 光山寺, a project spanning over three decades. The temple grounds are a captivating blend of traditional Japanese architecture and vibrant colors. Replicas of iconic structures like the Yomeimon Gate and Phoenix Hall stand alongside original creations. The five-storied pagoda, the Tower of The Great Merciful Mother, marks the resting place of Kozo’s mother. But 光山寺 holds more than just architectural marvels. A journey into the Thousand Buddha Cave is an experience unlike any other. Descending into the darkness, surrounded by graphic depictions of hell and the chilling sound of cascading water, one might feel a shiver of unease. Yet, the presence of 1,000 Buddha statues nestled within the cave walls offers a strange comfort. Emerging from the cave’s depths, visitors are greeted by the imposing statue of Kuse Kannon, the deity of healing and salvation. The path then leads to an unexpected sight: the Hill of Hope. This dazzling white marble garden, designed by Italian sculptor Itto Kuetani, is a breathtaking spectacle. The 3,000 tons of Carrara marble shimmer under the sun, creating an ethereal atmosphere.
