Hidden amidst the serene landscape of Kyoto stands Sennyū-ji a temple steeped in history. Its very name whispers of a past intertwined with emperors and noble families. Sennyū-ji wasn’t always known by this name. Originally founded as Senyū-ji in 855 it boasts a history older than many Kyoto landmarks. Legend suggests it was built on the site of a former mountain villa. Another account claims it replaced an earlier temple Hōrin-ji. This temple was founded by Kūkai. Sennyū-ji’s present name however arrived much later. A significant change occurred during the reign of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. This shift happened sometime between 1503 and 1592. The temple became associated with the influential figure Jirō. His legacy lives on in the name Sennyū-ji.

The temple’s grounds hold a profound significance as the resting place of several emperors. Emperor Go-Horikawa and Emperor Shijō were among the first to be interred here. Their mausoleum was known as Tsukinowa no misasagi. The list of emperors buried at Sennyū-ji extends. Later emperors like Go-Momozono are also enshrined at Tsukinowa no misasagi. Other imperial mausoleums such as Nochi no Tsukinowa no Higashiyama no misasagi exist within the complex. This underlines Sennyū-ji’s importance in Japan’s imperial history.

Beyond its historical significance Sennyū-ji houses significant works of art. Its nehan-zu painting is an awe-inspiring sight. This massive artwork depicts the Buddha on his deathbed. At eight by sixteen meters it holds the title of the largest such painting in all of Japan. Such treasures are rarely revealed. Viewings are infrequent and often restricted to short periods.

Sennyū-ji isn’t just a repository of history. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of tradition. It seamlessly blends the spiritual and the historical. It continues to attract pilgrims and visitors alike. Each stone each tree each building whispers a story of centuries past. As we stand before Sennyū-ji we’re not just looking at a temple. We’re connecting with the heart of imperial Japan. We’re gazing into the very soul of Kyoto.
