“Children’s paradise” springs to mind. That is how many describe this special corner of Beijing Zoo. Welcome to the Children’s Zoo.
Beijing Zoo is not just about pandas and tigers. It also cherishes its younger visitors. The Children’s Zoo offers a unique experience. It lets children connect with animals directly.
Back in 1984 the first Children’s Zoo opened. It was south of the Reptile House. This was a novel concept then. Beijing Zoo embraced the idea of interactive learning. Inspired by zoos abroad it created a space where kids could engage with gentle creatures.
Imagine petting a pony its soft mane tickling your fingers. Or feeding a fluffy lamb feeling its gentle nibble. These were the experiences that made the Children’s Zoo special. There were small animal exhibits with playful designs. They housed familiar farm animals. These included ponies sheep goats rabbits and even dogs and cats. Children could feed and touch these animals. They learned about them firsthand. The zoo fostered a love for animals early on. In 1988 the zoo added pony rides.
Shen Rui a leader from the Beijing Women’s Federation opened the zoo.
Sadly that original Children’s Zoo closed in 1994. But the spirit lived on. In 1996 a new Children’s Zoo opened. This time it was west of the Giraffe House. It continued the tradition of animal encounters. It also added small rides for amusement.
Today the Children’s Zoo remains a cherished part of Beijing Zoo. It is a place where kids can meet gentle animals. They learn about respect and care. The Children’s Zoo creates memories that last a lifetime. It is more than just a zoo exhibit. It is a place where compassion grows.
