Why is Shitennoji Temple called the turtle temple? Picture yourself standing before Shitennoji in Osaka one of Japan’s oldest temples. It’s also the oldest in Osaka. This Buddhist temple holds a special place in Japanese history. Prince Shotoku a devout Buddhist commissioned its construction in 593 AD. He wanted Buddhism to flourish in Japan. He believed it essential for Japan’s progress. Three skilled Korean carpenters from the Baekje kingdom helped build it. The temple’s name Shitennoji means Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings. These kings represent the four cardinal directions. The temple wasn’t just a place of worship. It also provided education welfare and healthcare to the people. Sadly the temple burned down several times. It was meticulously rebuilt each time keeping its original 6th-century design. But the Shitennoji you see today isn’t just about history and architecture. Many people call it the turtle temple. Why? A large pond near the temple complex is home to hundreds of turtles. People abandoned their pet turtles there. The compassionate monks took care of them. The turtle population grew. The temple became known as a turtle sanctuary. You can see Reeve’s turtles and even the soft-shelled suppon snapping turtle. The suppon is a delicacy. Watching the turtles is a fun free activity in Osaka. There’s a flea market on the 21st and 22nd of each month. Explore the temple grounds. Discover the turtles and the rich history of Shitennoji. It’s a journey through time and a testament to faith compassion and the enduring spirit of Osaka.
