Emerging from the vibrant tapestry of Beijing’s academic scene is the Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology (BNRist). Established in 2017, BNRist stands as a testament to China’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of information science. Imagine standing here, at the forefront of innovation, where groundbreaking research is shaping the future. BNRist isn’t just a building; it’s a crucible of ideas. It’s a place where brilliant minds converge to explore the intricacies of 6G communications, artificial intelligence, information security, and next-generation chips. The center is attached to the prestigious Tsinghua University, drawing on the strength of seven first-level disciplines. This includes electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, computer science and technology, control science and engineering, software engineering, cyberspace security, and integrated circuit science and engineering. BNRist has a rich history, evolving from the Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology, founded in 2003. Over the years, the laboratory achieved significant milestones, earning prestigious awards like the first prize of the State Natural Science Award. It also garnered the first prize of the State Technological Invention Award and the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. BNRist continues this legacy of excellence. The center’s organizational structure, led by the Dean’s office, fosters collaboration and innovation. Thirteen cross-innovation groups and several common technology platforms work together on core technological research. They also explore frontier research in basic science, striving to overcome obstacles hindering the country’s development. Located on the Tsinghua University campus, BNRist boasts state-of-the-art facilities, occupying a two-hectare space within the Information Science and Technology building. This 36,000-square-meter facility provides a stimulating environment for groundbreaking research. BNRist isn’t just focused on internal progress. It actively collaborates with local governments and industries, forming a government-industry-university-research alliance. This collaborative approach drives integrated innovation, develops disruptive applications, and opens up new industrial directions. BNRist represents China’s ambition to lead the global information science landscape, constantly pushing the boundaries of knowledge and shaping the future of technology.
