A colossal sandalwood Buddha. That’s what awaits you at the Lama Temple. Also known as Yonghe Temple this majestic structure stands as Beijing’s largest and most important Buddhist temple.

Imagine Emperor Yongzheng a young prince residing within these very walls. The Hall of Everlasting Protection once served as his home. Later it became his final resting place. A testament to his devotion to medicine and longevity. The hall features the Bhaisajya-guru the Medicine Buddha. He heals the sick with his teachings.

The Lama Temple’s history extends beyond a single emperor. Built in 1694 it initially served as a part of the city wall. Years later Emperor Qianlong brought 300 Tibetan monks and 200 Chinese students to reside here. Transforming it into a thriving center of Buddhist practice. A testament to the enduring power of faith and learning.

Marvel at the five main halls. Each one grander than the last. Clockwise prayer wheels spin. Multicolored tiles gleam. Lion statues stand guard. Within the largest hall resides a breathtaking wooden Buddha. The largest in the world. You can purchase and burn joss sticks. It is an act of worship and devotion.

Explore the Hall of Heavenly Kings. Bronze lions guard the entrance. Inside stands Maitreya the fifth Buddha. Legend says he’ll return when the oceans shrink. Then he will freely walk the earth. Four Heavenly Kings flank Maitreya their statues adding to the majesty.

Then visit the Hall of Harmony and Peace. This main palace houses three bronze Buddhas. They represent the three ages. There is Sakyamuni founder of Buddhism. Then Kasyapa Matanga who introduced Buddhism to China in the first century. Finally Maitreya once again is present.

The Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses is the temple’s climax. This final hall houses a truly awe-inspiring sight. A nearly four-story high Buddha carved from sandalwood. It is an image of breathtaking size and beauty. Its presence is both humbling and inspiring.

The Lama Temple is more than just a collection of buildings. It is a living testament to faith and history. The scent of burning incense lingers. Lammas go about their daily lives. You can witness them worship. It’s a truly immersive experience. An unforgettable visit that will stay with you. The Lama Temple awaits. Explore its wonders.
