“Hope does not disappoint us.” These words resonate deeply here at Fushimi Church. They are especially meaningful as we explore its history. Let’s step back in time. We will uncover the story of this Catholic church in Kyoto.
The story of Fushimi Church began in 1949. Catholic missionaries started their work in the Fushimi area. A significant milestone occurred in April of that year. The establishment of Seibo Girls’ School marked an important step for the community.
In 1950, the Fushimi mission district was established. Father Witte became the first priest in charge. The church was initially named “St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church.” At that time, the church lacked a proper sanctuary. There was no rectory either. The martial arts hall of Seibo Girls’ School served as a temporary church. Mass was celebrated there. Religious teachings were also given in that hall. The Legion of Mary was established during this period.
A significant development followed. A real church was built. This became possible through generous support. The support came from the Maryknoll Society.
The dedication ceremony for the new church took place on April 11 1951. Later that year, the Kyoto Diocese was established. It was elevated from the Kyoto Vicariate. Bishop Furube became the first Bishop of Kyoto. The dedication ceremony was officiated by Bishop Furube.
Over the years, many priests have served at Fushimi Church. They include Father Dievesah, who became the second pastor in 1955. Father Hughes followed as the third pastor in 1958. Father Wakamatsu became the fourth pastor in 1959.
Many changes and improvements have marked the church’s journey. In 1965, Mass transitioned from Latin to Japanese. This made the service more accessible to the local community.
The church celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1976. A commemorative ceremony marked the occasion on October 17.
Various renovations and expansions have occurred over the years. These include the construction of a scout house in 1985. The church interior was renovated in 1986. In 1991, Fushimi Church celebrated its 40th anniversary. Several renovation projects were undertaken in commemoration. The outer walls of the sanctuary and rectory were painted. Repairs were made to the floor and roof of the evangelization hall. Stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary.
In 2000, the church marked the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. Repairs were made to the roof and bell tower of the sanctuary.
The 50th anniversary of Fushimi Church was celebrated in 2001. A commemorative Mass was held in September.
In 2011, Fushimi Church launched its official website. This provided a new way to connect with the community. Also in that year, the church became the headquarters for the Philippine Mission Society.
