Imagine this colossal stone. This is the Nine Dragon Screen. It’s the largest stone sculpture in the Forbidden City.

This magnificent piece of marble depicts nine dragons playing with pearls. It’s located behind the Hall of Preserved Harmony. You can see it in the middle of the stairway.

The Nine Dragon Screen wasn’t always here. It was originally carved during the Ming Dynasty. It underwent further sculpting during the Qing Dynasty. Can you believe that?

Transporting this massive stone was an incredible feat of engineering. It was brought from Fangshan. That’s about 70 kilometers away. Twenty thousand men along with thousands of mules and horses were needed. The journey took a month.

To make the transportation easier wells were dug every 500 meters. Water was pumped onto the road to reduce friction. Think of the effort involved.

Touching this sacred stone was punishable by death during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Nine Dragon Screen was considered holy. It truly represents the power and might of those emperors.

The sheer size is breathtaking. It measures 16.57 meters long 3.07 meters wide and 1.7 meters thick. It weighs approximately 250 tons. Its presence is awe-inspiring.

This incredible sculpture is a testament to ancient Chinese artistry. It’s a powerful symbol of imperial power and a true wonder to behold. The Nine Dragon Screen is truly one of the most impressive works of art I have ever seen. Enjoy the rest of your tour.
