Deep within every stone sleeps a story, a whisper from the past. This unassuming stele, the 人海供養塔 Stele, holds a tale as old as the mountains themselves. You see, this stele marks a place of peace, a quiet testament to a man named Genshin. He lived centuries ago, a monk who sought solace and enlightenment in these very hills. He founded Zuishin-in Temple, the heart of the Shingon Buddhist sect here in Japan. Legend says that Genshin, known for his compassion, discovered an injured cow. He nursed the creature back to health, offering it shelter and food. His devotion touched even the heavens. When the cow passed away, Genshin, in an act of profound respect, painted the image of the deity Kannon onto the cowhide. From this act of empathy, the temple earned its original name, “Manjusri Temple on Cowhide Mountain”. Today, the serene presence of the 人海供養塔 Stele serves as a quiet reminder of Genshin’s kindness and its ripple effect throughout time. The stele reminds us that every act of compassion, no matter how small, echoes through eternity.
