“Why ‘Prefectural’?” A student once asked a professor on these very grounds at Kyoto Prefectural University. The professor smiled. He knew the question held more than simple curiosity.

Welcome to Kyoto Prefectural University’s Shimogamo campus. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine. This public university has deep roots in Kyoto. It was established in 1949. The university’s origins stretch back even further. They include Kyoto Prefectural Agricultural and Forestry School. Also, Kyoto Prefectural Women’s Vocational School.

Kyoto Prefectural University has two campuses. This one is the Shimogamo campus in Kyoto City. The other is the essential campus in Kizugawa City.

The Shimogamo campus serves as the main hub. It houses the university’s central functions. Here you will find classrooms and the library. There is also an attached farm. Athletic facilities are here too.

Kyoto Prefectural University has three undergraduate departments. These are Literature, Public Policy, and Life and Environmental Sciences. There are also three graduate schools. They are Literature, Public Policy, and Life and Environmental Science.

The university has undergone many changes. In 1895, it moved to a newly built school building in Katsura. In 1918, it moved again. This time it was to a new building in Shimogamo village. In 1959, it was renamed Kyoto Prefectural University.

The Shimogamo campus faces challenges. Many facilities are over 40 years old. This aging infrastructure presents problems. The seismic resistance rate of facilities is also low. It lags behind national university corporations.

The university is planning a new gymnasium. It wants a facility with arena functions. Kyoto Prefecture aims to complete it in 2024.

Kyoto Prefectural University collaborates with other institutions. It has agreements with 11 cities and villages in Kyoto Prefecture. It also partners with public organizations. These collaborations enhance its regional contributions.

The Shimogamo campus is located in Kyoto City’s northern region. This area is being developed as the “Kitayama Culture Zone.” The campus neighbors cultural facilities. These include the Kyoto Botanical Garden and Kyoto Concert Hall. The “Hokuzan Gate” provides direct access to the botanical garden.

The students are very active here. There are 19 athletic groups and 35 cultural groups. Various clubs also exist.

The university hosts campus festivals. The New Student Welcome Festival is in April. The Nagaraku Festival takes place in November.
