In 1971, amidst the bustling energy of Kyoto, Ryogaoka Elementary School emerged. It was carved from the existing Hanayama Elementary School district. This marked the birth of a new educational haven, Kyoto Shiritsu Ryogaoka Elementary School. The name “Ryogaoka” itself carries a charming local story. It’s a blend of “Ryo” from the grand Myōgaoka, where Emperor Tenji’s palace once stood, and “gaoka” from Hinooka. The two place names were combined using the colloquial “ga” represented in written form as “ヶ”. Kyoto Shiritsu Ryogaoka Elementary School serves students from grades 1 through 6. They follow a trimester system, nurturing young minds in a vibrant learning environment. After graduating, these students typically continue their education at Kyoto Shiritsu Hanayama Junior High School. The school’s history is intertwined with the rich tapestry of the surrounding area. Myōgaoka, a significant area within the school district, derives its name from the misasaki (palace) of Emperor Tenji. The historical presence of figures like Fujiwara Kamatari and Emperor Tenji adds an air of ancient wisdom to the very ground Ryogaoka Elementary School stands upon. Did you know the area has been inhabited since ancient times? In fact, it’s believed settlements developed around Fujiwara Kamatari’s “Asukadera” (669) and Emperor Tenji’s “Yamagaoka Palace” (699). Over time, the area flourished further with the establishment of Buddhist temples like Anjuji Temple. The legacy of influential figures like Fujiwara no Michinaga is also imprinted on the area’s history.
