Established in 1954, Kyoto Municipal Junior College of Nursing, often called Shikan-tan, holds a unique place in Kyoto’s history. Did you know it was the only public junior college specializing in nursing in Kyoto? The college, nestled in Nakagyo Ward, offered a focused two-year program. It catered to a small cohort, with an annual intake of around 50 students. Kyoto Municipal Junior College of Nursing served the community for decades, providing essential training for nurses who served in various city hospitals. The campus was conveniently located near Kyoto Station and Nishiōji Station, making it accessible for students from across the city and beyond. Interestingly, despite its small size, Shikan-tan fostered a vibrant student life. Clubs ranged from volleyball and tennis to more traditional pursuits like calligraphy, tea ceremony, and flower arranging. This blend of modern and traditional mirrored Kyoto itself. Sadly, despite student protests and political opposition, the college closed its doors in 2013. The decision was met with criticism, particularly due to the lack of transparency surrounding the closure process and the subsequent transfer of its resources to a private university. This marked the end of an era for Shikan-tan, but its legacy continues in the countless nurses it trained who dedicated themselves to caring for Kyoto’s citizens.
