Kyoto’s Natural 200 Selection. What a peculiar name for a collection of natural wonders, wouldn’t you agree? Here we stand, not before a single sculpture, but in the presence of a living, breathing artwork curated by nature itself and recognized by the Kyoto Prefecture. Imagine the scope of this project. The Kyoto government, in 1990, decided to highlight the diverse and beautiful natural environment of the prefecture. They established the “Kyoto Fund for Green and Cultural Assets.” This fund was designed to draw attention to Kyoto’s natural beauty and engage the public with their surroundings. The result was the 京都の自然200選, Kyoto’s Natural 200 Selection. A committee, led by a renowned professor from Kyoto University of Education, reviewed suggestions from the public and local governments. Over several years, between 1991 and 1995, they meticulously selected 202 distinct locations representing the best of Kyoto’s flora, fauna, geological formations, and historical natural environments. Right here, at 上賀茂橋周辺 (Kamigamo Bridge vicinity), we find ourselves at one of these chosen sites, a place designated for its historical significance to the natural environment. This spot, along the Kamogawa River, speaks to the delicate interplay between humans and nature. The bridge itself, a testament to human ingenuity, connects communities and facilitates life. Yet, the surrounding area bursts with natural life, a gentle reminder of the forces that shape our world. While the specific flora or fauna present at this location aren’t detailed in the Selection’s overview, its inclusion speaks volumes. The committee saw something special here, a harmony between history and nature that they wanted to preserve and share.
